The name of the band is a reference to the novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, in which "42" is the answer to "the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything."By 1986 they were the biggest act on their record label, Polydor, and the third biggest in Europe, with multi-million selling albums The World Machine and Running In The Family.
