Her parents were staunch movie-lovers. Her full name was Better Davis Midler and she had been named after the famous Hollywood actress Bette Davis. Bette hailed from an extremely poor family that lived in Hawaii. She and her sister learned about ballet, theater and opera by reading books at the Public Library in Honolulu.
