Sri Lanka has celebrated a historic sporting achievement as Rumesh Tharanga claimed the gold medal in the men's javelin throw at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Tharanga secured the top spot on the podium with a powerful throw of 89.75 metres, bringing an end to the nation's two-decade wait for a Commonwealth gold.

Entering the final as the second-ranked athlete in the world, the young thrower faced a field of top international talent, including Indian Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra. After an unsuccessful first attempt, Tharanga launched his winning distance of 89.75 metres on his second throw, establishing a mark that remained unmatched through the remainder of the competition.

The victory marks Sri Lanka's fifth gold medal in Commonwealth Games history, joining previous triumphs by Barney Henricus in boxing, Duncan White in hurdles, Pushpamali Ramanayake and Malini Wickramasinghe in shooting, and Chinthana Vithanage in weightlifting. Additionally, Tharanga's achievement stands as Sri Lanka's first-ever Commonwealth gold medal in a field event.
