FIFA's proposal to sell minority stakes in its major competitions to private investors has sparked widespread backlash across global football, with major governing bodies threatening a complete boycott of future tournaments.

At an emergency meeting, UEFA's 55 member associations unanimously voted to reject FIFA President Gianni Infantino's plan to create a commercial subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise. The proposal involves selling stakes to external investors, with American venture capital firm Thrive Eternal expected to lead the investor group. UEFA declared that the World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product and warned that its members will boycott all FIFA competitions—including both the men's and women's World Cups as well as the Club World Cup—if the plan moves forward.

Concacaf, which governs football in North and Central America, also confirmed that its 41 member nations rejected the proposal. Officials from the region expressed deep concerns over the lack of consultation, the short timeline imposed by FIFA, and the necessity of private investment following a highly profitable World Cup.

To pass, the plan requires 106 votes from FIFA's 211 member associations. Infantino offered federations up to 40 million dollars each to support the move, setting a September deadline for initial acceptance. However, with UEFA and Concacaf combined accounting for 96 member nations aligned in opposition, the proposal faces significant resistance.

The pushback extends beyond national associations. Football leaders, government representatives, and supporters' groups have publicly criticized the initiative, arguing that introducing private capital threatens the integrity and traditional structure of the global game. While FIFA maintains that the investment scheme is optional, key stakeholders across Europe and the Americas remain firm in their stance against the commercialization of the World Cup.
