Dekker was encouraged by his co-workers to pursue a career in the music industry due to his incredible singing but he struggled to break the musical industry. He was not successful when auditioning in 1961. Finally his musical career was established due to the release of his single “Honour Your Mother and Father” in 1963. Dekker wrote the song.
