Yusuf Islam has been through multiple near-death experiences. At the age of nineteen while performing with Jimi Hendrix he contracted tuberculosis and was hospitalized for awhile. Years later Yusuf nearly drowned, during which he states that he prayed to God and said that he would work for him; shortly afterwards Yusuf converted to Islam.
