Eddie Jones confident of avoiding repeat of 2011 antics

England head coach Eddie Jones insists that there will not be a repeat of the antics which marred their 2011 World Cup campaign in New Zealand.

The players embarrassed the country after being caught up in several controversies during the competition eight years ago.

Manu Tuilagi was disciplined for jumping off a ferry while a number of individuals were involved in a drunken night out early on in the tournament.

After hosting the competition in 2015, this will be the Red Rose’s first World Cup on foreign soil since that ill-fated trip to the southern hemisphere.

In a country such as Japan, which is renowned for its politeness and courteousness, Jones admits that his squad will have to be wary of their actions during their time in Asia.

“They are going to have to be conscious of the social behaviour that is allowed in Japan,” the Australian told the Telegraph. “In certain situations, even being loud can get you into trouble, just being normally loud. So we just need to be conscious of that, behave with good sense.

“I think we’re a reasonably well-behaved team, but there are times when people step out of line a little bit and all we’ve got to do is make sure we pull them back and put them back on course.

“I think it’s appropriate behaviour. I think we’ve got a fine bunch of boys. Sometimes boys will be boys and that’s a problem but I think they’re good characters, they’re aware of the responsibility they carry as members of an England side and I’ve got no problems with the way they conduct themselves.

“It’s just common sense. We’ll have a couple of lessons about what you should and should not do; what’s important, what’s not. [For example] make sure you’ve got socks with no holes, that sort of thing – you’ve always got to take off your shoes! Take toilet paper to the train station. All those sort of important things.”
