Derek Trucks says his time with the Allman Brothers Band taught him to learn from the mistakes of others. Trucks said that most importantly he learned how to know when to quit:

"Being around the Allman Brothers camp, there are a lot of stories to learn from. And some of those I was around for," he began.

"A lot of the best learning stories you'll never read; but there are things you definitely key in on, and you try not to repeat mistakes."

Trucks admits seeing people "crash and burn" as a result of hard living: "Most of the lessons are learning from the potholes other people have hit, and trying to avoid those."

"You do it for the right reasons - and you realise you can't really compromise."
