My child was someone who worked quietly in the background,' says Sallay's mother

The mother of former State Intelligence Service Chief, Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay, visiting the site of the ongoing satyagraha launched today (08), spoke to the media, commenting on the services her son extended to the country.

Speaking to the media, she said:

“You all should receive more and more blessings for what you are doing for my son. I am not here to praise my child — if you go to Nugegoda, ask people how much love I have for my son. If people love him that much, imagine the pain of the mother who gave birth to him. We keep silent about these things, but they burn inside my heart. I am also a patient; I have blood pressure. I only have the right over my child.

Reverend cardinals and others, it’s no use saying anything. I am not criticising anyone. These are people who do not understand politics properly. I am a religious person. I will never give up my faith. I pray to Jesus every day. Every Tuesday I go by wheelchair to the church near my home. I used to go to Kochchikade church. God knows more about my son than anyone — I have entrusted him to God.

My son was never a person who liked praise. He worked quietly. Wherever he went, he never even stayed for photographs. I also stayed with him in France for a year when he was there. All the children who come to my home bow to him and leave.

If you want to know about us, ask the people around Nugegoda how I raised my children. Even at night, I hear people calling ‘Mummy’. I open the door at two or three in the morning, thinking it's him. People ask whether he is in prison. Why are you silent about this? Is this fair? Even God and Buddha will not forgive what is being done.

Forgive me, respected monks, for speaking like this. This is my emotion. Even if I die tonight, I am already in my seventies, I have nothing more to say.

During the war I used to watch television every day. I pace back and forth thinking of my son. He is in the list of the dead. He served in the Commandos. I raised him well — took him to school, taught him good values, to help others, to respect people.

We take better care of even our dogs, spending 50,000–60,000 rupees on them. We have two dogs at home. If this can happen to my son, I have nothing to say. It is a sin that even God and Buddha will not forgive.

But you will get what is due. I will wait for that outcome. Even if I die, it does not matter. You are all witnesses. What is being done to my son — officers like Shani Abeysekara — I said it even then. He once said my son should be treated with respect, that things would not work if he stayed in that position and should be removed slowly. They remove people who serve the country and take over for themselves. That is not how it should be. My children are not like that.”
