Ampara General Hospital recorded a rare triplet birth yesterday (23), bringing the total number of multiple births at the facility to 16 within the past year.
A medical team led by Obstetrician and Gynecologist Dr. Tharindu Edirisuriya performed the Caesarean section to deliver the infants.
The newborns, all male, weighed 1 kg, 1.3 kg, and 1.4 kg, respectively. Pediatrician Dr. Dimuthu Subasinghe confirmed that while the triplets currently receive care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), they remain in good health. The unit presently treats 11 infants, often receiving underweight babies from distant areas such as Hambantota, Monaragala, and Mahiyanganaya.
Dr. Edirisuriya noted that since joining the hospital, he has overseen five triplet births and 11 twin births, totaling 37 children. He credited the successful management of these high-risk deliveries to the advanced facilities provided by Hospital Director Dr. Ranga Chandrasekara and the expertise of the NICU, which he described as one of the best in the country.
Hospital Director Dr. Ranga Chandrasekara highlighted the facility's capability by recalling a previous case where a triplet weighing only 650g was successfully saved. He emphasised that the hospital now attracts patients from various provinces due to its specialized care.
The father of the triplets, Supun Nadeera, expressed his gratitude to the staff, noting that despite being advised to seek treatment elsewhere, his trust in the Ampara medical team was well-founded. His wife and the three boys are reportedly doing well.
