In a display of quick action, two female police officers in Aluthgama chased down and arrested a suspect today (9) who was attempting to flee in a stolen three-wheeler.
The owner of the vehicle, a resident of Bentota, alerted the Aluthgama Police Officer-in-Charge (OIC) via telephone as the theft was occurring.
Since male officers were not immediately available at the station, the OIC dispatched the two female officers to respond.
They pursued the fleeing vehicle along the Aluthgama-Welipenna main road, successfully intercepting it and apprehending the suspect.
Investigations revealed that the 25-year-old suspect, a resident of Ihalahéna, Mawanella, had traveled to Aluthgama by train this morning specifically to carry out the theft.
He is scheduled to be produced before the Kalutara Magistrate's Court tomorrow. Under the direction of Chief Inspector Sampath Sanjeewa, Aluthgama Police are conducting further inquiries.
