Preliminary discussions are underway to explore the possibility of imposing restrictions on social media access for school students and minors, according to Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne.

The Ministry of Digital Economy stands ready to provide technical support if a policy decision is reached collectively by the Ministries of Education, Mass Media, and Child and Women Affairs.

This initiative follows concerns raised by parents and various stakeholders regarding minors exceeding healthy boundaries while using social platforms.

Government departments have already commenced research to investigate these concerns further.

No final decision exists regarding the specific age limits, implementation dates, or the exact nature of the regulations, as the process remains in the early consultative phase.

Deputy Minister Weeraratne noted that countries such as Australia and France already enforced similar restrictions, suggesting that any local policy should be tailored to suit the specific context of the country.
