A group of Opposition Members of Parliament, led by Ajith P. Perera, visited the Lakvijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai today (27) to inspect operations following allegations of substandard coal imports. The visit aims to investigate recent claims regarding the quality of fuel and its impact on the national power grid.
During the inspection, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Sujeewa Senasinghe stated that although the plant is designed to generate 900 MW daily, current electricity production has dropped by approximately 150 MW due to the use of inferior coal. He further noted that the previous shipment alone caused a capacity loss of 90 MW per day.
The MP highlighted that the importation of three ships carrying low-quality coal has resulted in massive financial losses for the country. The delegation continues to monitor the facility's technical performance and coal stocks to gather further evidence for a parliamentary report.
