SJB National Organiser and Member of Parliament Sujeeva Senasinghe is urging opposition parties to fast-track a no-confidence motion against Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.

Senasinghe stated he intends to discuss the proposal with the Leader of the Opposition, other opposition party leaders, and political figures outside of Parliament.

The call for the motion follows the recent interdiction of the Deputy Secretary-General of Parliament, Chaminda Kularatne.

Senasinghe described the Speaker’s decision to suspend a top-tier official without a formal inquiry or a chance to respond as a "serious blow to parliamentary democracy."

He argued that previous Speakers have refrained from such direct interference in the independent Secretariat.

Senasinghe further accused the Speaker of acting in a biased manner by restricting the speaking time of opposition members.

He noted that while a similar motion was considered previously following complaints to international bodies like the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), it was temporarily shelved in hopes that the Speaker's conduct would improve.

However, he contends the latest suspension of the Deputy Secretary-General proves that a formal challenge to the Speaker’s authority is now necessary to ensure fairness for the opposition.

The MP also criticized the current government for its alleged influence over the Attorney General and the Audit-General, claiming that these actions are part of a broader attempt to undermine the country’s legal and parliamentary independence.
