National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa launched a Satyagraha today (12) in front of Isurupaya, the Ministry of Education in Battaramulla.
The protest, organised by the group "Adults Standing for Children," calls for the immediate withdrawal of proposed education reforms and the resignation of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya from her role as the Minister of Education.
The protest follows Weerawansa's visit to Kandy yesterday, where he lobbied the chief prelates of the Malwatta and Asgiriya chapters. He alleged that the government is rushing through "unscientific" reforms—including controversial digital links in school modules—without proper expert consultation.
He claimed these changes prioritise a commercial agenda over the academic welfare of students.
Addressing the media at the protest site this morning, the former minister invited parents and civil organisations to join the sit-in, regardless of political affiliation.
He warned that the Satyagraha would continue until the government provides a formal assurance to halt the current reform process and address the concerns raised by the Buddhist clergy and education specialists.
