A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal was positioned approximately 200 km southeast of Batticaloa as of 4:00 AM today (09), according to the Department of Meteorology. The system continues to intensify and move northwest, with a high probability of crossing the Sri Lankan coast between Pottuvil and Trincomalee this evening.
The weather forecast indicates cloudy skies across most of the island. Intermittent showers or thundershowers will likely affect the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, Central, and North-Western provinces. In other regions, scattered showers or thundershowers may develop during the evening or night.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is anticipated in parts of the Northern and North-Central provinces, as well as the Matale, Trincomalee, and Puttalam districts. Additionally, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Batticaloa may receive moderate to heavy rainfall between 50 mm and 75 mm.
The department also warns of very strong winds between 50-60 km/h, with occasional gusts reaching 70 km/h. These conditions will primarily affect the eastern slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Central, Uva, and Eastern provinces, and the Gampaha and Colombo districts. Citizens are urged to take necessary precautions against lightning and temporary strong winds during thundershowers to minimize accidents.
