The planned No-Confidence Motion against the government, which the Opposition is expected to lose, will serve as a platform to further clarify the state's education policies to the public.
Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya made these remarks while visiting Kandy today (08) to brief the Chief Prelates of the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters. The visit aimed to explain the measures taken by the Education Ministry regarding the inclusion of a controversial website name in a Grade 6 English subject module under the new education reforms.
Addressing the media, the Prime Minister stated that while the Opposition possesses the right to table such a motion, the government welcomes the opportunity to engage in a broad parliamentary debate on education for a day or two. She noted that opposition groups appear less driven by a genuine desire for quality education and more by the intent to exploit errors for political gain. Emphasizing the government's responsibility to ensure the credibility of the education system, she pledged immediate intervention to rectify any flaws that arise.
During the meeting, the delegation presented 106 modules printed for Grades 1 through 6 to the Chief Prelates. The Prime Minister reported that the Prelates appreciated the corrective steps taken regarding the English module and acknowledged the national necessity of the new education reforms. They advised the government to continue the process while rectifying errors through constant dialogue with the Maha Sangha.
Reflecting on the broader context, the Prime Minister highlighted that the school curriculum remained stagnant for nearly a decade, making reforms essential for the progress of students. She argued that delaying implementation is not a solution to existing problems and that the government is prepared to face challenges and correct mistakes while moving the system forward.
MPs Thushari Jayasinghe and Thanura Dissanayake, Kandy Mayor Chandrasiri Wijenayake, and Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa also participated in the visit.%MCEPASTEBIN%%MCEPASTEBIN%
