The low-pressure system situated southeast of the island is expected to develop into a depression within the next 12 hours.

The Department of Meteorology predicts the system will move west-northwest towards Sri Lanka's eastern coast, leading to increased rainfall in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces starting tomorrow (8).

Heavy showers exceeding 50mm are forecast for the Uva province and the Batticaloa, Ampara, Polonnaruwa, Matale, and Hambantota districts.

Other regions may experience afternoon thundershowers, while strong winds up to 50 km/h are expected across several provinces and the eastern slopes of the central hills.

Authorities advised naval and fishing communities to avoid the sea areas from Kankesanturai to Hambantota via Trincomalee and Pottuvil until further notice.

Due to rising water levels, two spill gates of the Kala Wewa and all seven gates of the Ulhitiya-Ratkinda reservoir remain open.

Additionally, the National Building Research Institute (NBRI) issued landslide warnings for the Ududumbara, Neildandahinna, and Walapane divisions.
