The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has addressed a formal letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, urging the immediate appointment of a permanent Auditor General in accordance with the Constitution.

The Association highlighted its grave concern over the failure to appoint a permanent official since the retirement of the former Auditor General in April 2025.

It was pointed out that the office of the Auditor General, established under Article 153(1) of the Constitution, plays a pivotal role in ensuring the accountability of all state institutions.

Sri Lanka is currently navigating an economic recovery under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program and significant foreign aid is being received in the wake of the destruction caused by Cyclone 'Ditwah’.

The BASL emphasizes that maximum financial transparency is essential during this period to maintain international confidence.

The letter suggests that the appointee should be politically non-partisan, possess high professional expertise and independence and be capable of securing the consensus of the Constitutional Council.
