Ragama and Kelaniya researchers unveil world’s first single drug for stroke prevention

A breakthrough set to redefine global cardiac care has emerged from Sri Lanka, as the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Ragama, unveiled a pioneering medicine that experts say could mark a turning point in world medical history.
The innovation, showcased for the first time this week at World Stroke Congress in Barcelona on October 22, 2025 is being hailed as a potential game-changer in the field of cardiac treatment.
One of the mentors of this innovation, Neurologist, Dr. Bimsara Senanayake said that three types of antihypertensive drugs have being combined into a single tablet.
“This will firstly help patients to use one tables and for the less affluent It would give thema saving on the cost as well as it replaces the commonly prescribed triple-pill.”
“Our research done for over eight years indicates that this single dose can reduce the risk of stroke caused by ruptured blood vessels due to high blood pressure by an astounding 60%.”
“Nearly 80 percent of strokes are caused either by blocked vessels or by bleeding from ruptured arteries. Our findings show that with proper blood pressure control, this new medication can cut the risk of a second stroke by as much as 60 percent,” Dr Senanayake said.
Dr. Gotabhaya Ranasinghe Cardiologist also endorsed this an added that around 35% local population between the ages of 30 and 80 suffer from high blood pressure. Sadly, most of them are unaware of this and do not seek treatment.”
“According to test results this breakthrough drug while helping to bring down levels of blood pressure rapidly will also help to maintain daily constancy.
This drug It is an important breakthrough in preventing hypertension and related health risks,” Dr. Ranasinghe said.
