John Mellencamp has released "Sometimes There's God," the second single from his upcoming album, Plain Spoken.

The T Bone Burnett produced cut follows the record's lead single "Troubled Man," and centers on Mellencamp's struggle with religious feelings.

"Unlike so many of his more recent, starkly portentious songs, 'Sometimes There's God' finds a brightly colored hem to grab onto as the purpled clouds hurtle past," writes Something Else Reviews of the cut.

Meanwhile, Ultimate Classic Rock calls it a "roots-pulling number that reaches back to Mellencamp's most fertile period in the mid-'80s."
Plain Spoken, Mellencamp's 22nd studio release, is due September 23.
