Neil Young has put his support behind the Rainbow Connection Kickstarter page, an initiative to put the brakes on illegal logging.
The organizers hope to retrofit old cell phones with solar cells, hang them in trees and use the signals to catch loggers before they can cut down the trees.
The tech is a step up from satellite surveillance, which produces results at a slower pace.
"This technology enables the forest to talk to the world," Young said. "When the forest is threatened, the forest can speak and you can hear it."
Should the campaign succeed, the Rainbow Connection will provide help to the Tembé indigenous people of Brazil.
Young has had success with Kickstarter in the past; in fact, his Pono music player raised the third most funds in Kickstarter history.
