It’s the age-old tale of embarking on a quest to discover your perfect haircut for your face shape — and it’s been a rocky road to say the least.
If you’re like most women, you’re probably tired of the countless trial and error haircuts that have either left you emotionally scarred, or just straight up disappointed.
We can’t all be Anna Wintour, I guess?
Wrong. Believe it or not, finding your most flattering haircut really only requires one key starting point: Looking at your face shape.
Since the whole point of a haircut is to highlight and emphasize the key attractive features of the face, it should come as no surprise that each face shape comes with a different set of rules, that can help the frustrated females of the world finally achieve their signature style.
So what are those rules? Find out, and discover your best haircut according to your face shape, here.
OVAL FACE SHAPE
While I wish I could give you a list of haircuts for oval faces, unfortunately, this rebellious face is all about breaking the rules.
These blessed little ladies can get away with just about any cut and style, due to the neutral shape of the face. While the face shape has its natural curves and angles, it's not as dramatic as say, the square or round face.
So universally, there are no real rules with this face shape — which is both a blessing and a curse.
Try to have fun with it ladies, and remember: you're probably smoking hot no matter what your cut. #winning
SQUARE FACE SHAPE
If you're a square-faced beauty like Rosario Dawson, then you want to go for a haircut that builds roundness into your cheeks, like a bob or wedge.
Square faces typically lack fullness in the cheeks (unlike round face shapes), so the idea is to soften the angles of the face, by incorporating movement.
Layers and soft waves are a great way to achieve this.
ROUND FACE SHAPE
Beautiful full-faced ladies must do the complete opposite of their square-faced friends.
In order to take away from the natural roundness of the cheeks, you want more of a square haircut, like an A-line bob.
Other cuts like shags, or long and short hairstyles that incorporate a lot of layers are a genius way to distract from the fullness of the face.
When styling, adding soft curls or beach waves are also a great solution for making the face appear more angular.
Be sure to avoid any cuts or bobs that land smack dab in the middle of the cheeks, though.
This is the most unflattering cut for a round face, as it actually accentuates the round cheeks you're trying to downplay.
HEART FACE SHAPE
If you have a heart-shaped face like Sarah Hyland (or Reese Witherspoon), then your number-one rule is to add to the traditionally absent chin.
Be careful to avoid haircuts that land right on your cheeks (aka bobs or wedges cut to this length), as heart-shaped faces are naturally a bit more cheeky.
Instead, picking a style that softens the cheeks and adds to the chin is ideal.
Haircuts like Jessica Chastain's new lob, or bobs that hit below the jawline (again, avoid cheeks) are stellar styles for this face shape.
OBLONG FACE SHAPE
Oblong faces are the more rare face shapes, so be stoked if this is your look — you're basically a unicorn.
True to its name, oblong faces are essentially the longer version of an oval face.
So when selecting a haircut, you want to choose a style that will make the face rounder and shorter.
Side bangs and layers are stunning cuts for this face shape, as the concealing bangs and distracting layers help to take away from the face's length.
While side-swept bangs can be beautiful, proceed with caution if you're pondering Zooey Deschanel-style cut across bangs, especially when paired with flat-ironed hair.
The sleek, straight style will further elongate the face.
DIAMOND FACE SHAPE
Take a page from Rihanna's book and shine bright like a diamond.
Diamond faces are extremely similar to oval.
The only difference is diamond face shapes are more angular. So the good news is, just like an oval face, diamond face shapes are able to rock a wide range of cuts.
The bad news? They have to be cautious of volume.
Particularly on the top and sides of the head.
Meaning: Avoid bobs or wedges that fall around the cheek, and high bangs (that stem from the top of your head), are a no-go.
Adding fullness to these areas only sharpens the edges of the diamond (which isn't particularly flattering).
When selecting a cut, try to make sure the style is soft (whimsically cut layers are a good way to achieve this).
A beautifully layered bob is also a gorgeous haircut, which softens the edges of a diamond face.
