On November 3, 1957, a homeless stray from the streets of Moscow made history by becoming the first living creature to orbit the Earth aboard Sputnik II. Known to the world as Laika, the calm and affectionate female mongrel was selected for her resilience, small size, and gentle demeanor. Before her historic launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, lead medical scientist Vladimir Yazdovsky even brought her home so his children could play with her, wanting to give the gentle dog a taste of normal domestic life before her fatal mission.

Laika's flight was rushed into reality after Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev demanded a groundbreaking space milestone to mark the 40th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, leaving chief designer Sergei Korolev and his team just weeks to construct a pressurized capsule. Tragically, scientists knew from the start that Laika would not survive, as the technology to return living creatures safely from orbit had not yet been developed. While early Soviet reports suggested she survived for several days, declassified records later revealed that climate insulation failures caused her to die of severe overheating and stress just five to seven hours into the flight.

Despite her heartbreaking fate, Laika’s sacrifice proved that a living organism could survive the initial launch into weightlessness, paving the way for human spaceflight. The international backlash over her tragic mission permanently transformed animal welfare standards in space exploration, ensuring that subsequent canine cosmonauts like Belka and Strelka were launched with recovery systems that brought them back safely. Today, Laika remains an enduring national hero and global symbol of early space history, immortalized in monuments, stamps, and the hearts of millions.
