The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards delivered a landmark evening in Los Angeles hosted by Snoop Dogg, featuring historic milestones and a ceremony that largely celebrated powerhouse female artists. Taylor Swift made history by becoming the most successful artist in the history of the awards. Entering the night tied with Beyoncé on 30 wins, Swift secured the night's top honor for Video of the Year with the visuals for her track The Fate of Ophelia from her album The Life of a Showgirl. Swift also received the inaugural award for artist director for directing the 1990s infomercial parody video for Opalite, dedicating her win to the late Dolly Parton. During the ceremony, the 36-year-old also debuted the dark gothic thriller music video for her new song Patient Zero, which stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson and is featured on her newly released deluxe edition.

The original Queen of Pop, Madonna, also reigned supreme after heading into the night with a leading 13 nominations. The 68-year-old icon won artist of the year, best dance, and best collaboration alongside Sabrina Carpenter for their track Bring Your Love, while her team secured wins for best cinematography and choreography for Confessions II. Reflecting on her incredible longevity, Madonna reminded the audience that most attendees were likely not born when she performed at the very first VMAs 43 years ago. Her opening performance included a live duet with Carpenter and an appearance from British star Charli XCX. While accepting their award, Madonna playfully called out Carpenter's management for leaving her waiting on a direct message before they finally collaborated in the studio, prompting a humorous clarification from Carpenter on stage.

Meanwhile, Lisa from the K-pop group Blackpink made major history of her own by becoming the first Asian solo artist to win the best pop category. The Thai rapper and singer triumphed for her song Dream, which featured Japanese actor Kentaro Sakaguchi in its music video, successfully fending off fierce competition from massive global names including Swift, Ariana Grande, and Olivia Rodrigo. A visibly moved Lisa addressed her dedicated fans known as Lillies during her acceptance speech, expressing heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering support. The star-studded event also featured standout wins for British singers Raye and Sienna Spiro who won best new artist, BTS who picked up best group and song of the year for Swim, Olivia Rodrigo who won best alternative, and Nirvana who were honored with the prestigious Video Vanguard award alongside touching tributes to Dolly Parton and George Michael.
