Royal College, Colombo and S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia renew their historic rivalry in the 147th Battle of the Blues, the annual three-day cricket encounter which begins today (12) at the SSC Grounds. The match, played for the D. S. Senanayake Shield, carries a proud tradition, and both teams will be eager to produce competitive cricket and push for a decisive result over the three days.
Royal, led by Rehan Peiris, field a well-balanced side and appear to hold a slight advantage with a strong batting lineup. Meanwhile, the Thomians, captained by Avinash Fernando, arrive with a formidable bowling attack. The contest is therefore expected to shape up as Royal’s batting strength against the Thomians’ disciplined bowling unit, promising an intriguing battle.
Last year, S. Thomas’ College, under the leadership of Kavindu Dias, recorded a five-wicket victory, which levelled the overall series at 36 wins each. With the tally perfectly balanced, this year’s encounter offers both teams the opportunity to move ahead in the long-standing rivalry.
On paper, the two sides appear evenly matched, setting the stage for an exciting contest at the SSC. A positive approach from the opening session could play a crucial role in determining the direction of the game.
Royal have enjoyed a consistent season, playing 13 matches, with one outright victory against Nalanda College and the remainder ending in draws. Their unbeaten run has provided valuable confidence ahead of this prestigious fixture. Royal’s last victory in the series came in 2023 under Dasis Manchanayake, and they will be hoping to secure another win after a gap of two years.
Royal skipper Rehan Peiris, an elegant right-hand opening batsman, carries fond memories from last year’s encounter, having scored 158 runs along with a half-century in the second innings. He has continued his fine form this season, amassing 946 runs with three centuries, and enters the match with a chance to reach the 1,000-run milestone. The milestone would cap another 1,000-run season, making it two in a row.
The Sri Lanka Under-17 captain brings valuable leadership experience to the side. Former skipper Ramiru Perera and Hirun Liyanarachchi, who has accumulated 801 runs, are also key contributors with the bat. In addition, Sri Lanka Under-19 captain Vimath Dinsara further strengthens Royal’s batting lineup.
Former Royal captain Gamini Perera heads the coaching staff, with Rashan Peiris assisting as the batting specialist, as they look to guide the side with a positive approach in their quest for victory
In the bowling department, leg-spinner Ramiru Perera leads the attack with 39 wickets, while Himaru de Silva follows closely with 38. Young Sehandu Sooriyarachchi, only 16 years old, has also impressed with 26 wickets this season.
Meanwhile, S. Thomas’ College have played 16 matches this season, recording 14 draws, one outright win against Prince of Wales’ College, and a defeat to Ananda College in a low-scoring thriller. The Thomians will be keen to bounce back strongly and retain the shield.
Captain Avinash Fernando, along with 16-year-old all-rounder Reshon Solomons and Jaden Amaraweera, form the backbone of the Thomian batting order, while left-hander Aaron Kodituwakku adds stability to the lineup.
The Thomians’ greatest strength lies in their disciplined bowling unit, spearheaded by left-arm paceman Abheeth Paranawidana, who has claimed 44 wickets this season. He is supported by Gimhan Mendis, another left-arm seamer who has represented the Sri Lanka Under-17 team and is capable of generating pace and aggression. Together they form a potent attack that could challenge Royal’s batsmen.
Head coach Nilanka Peiris Jr, who captained the Thomians in the past, guided the team to victory in last year’s encounter and will be hoping to repeat that success and push his side ahead in the series tally.
