Turns out King Charles isn’t just about crowns, ceremonies, and royal wave perfection—according to Lionel Richie, he’s also got a killer sense of humor and a heart of gold.
Chatting with People magazine at The King's Trust Global Gala in New York City on May 1, Lionel got real about his longtime friendship with the monarch. “People see him as a King,” Richie said, “but what is he like as a friend? I will say... a sense of humor — you have no idea!”
Yup, the “All Night Long” legend didn’t just show up for the glitz—he’s been involved with The King’s Trust (formerly The Prince’s Trust) for nearly 40 years and became its first-ever Global Ambassador in 2019. From royal banquets to real talk, Lionel’s seen a side of Charles that most of us don’t: “He’s a wonderful, wonderful person who cares so much about people.”
And when it comes to making a difference? The King’s got ideas—big ones. “You probably won’t hear it all... but he’s a wonderful person, very funny,” Lionel added with a smile.
Having even performed at the King’s coronation, Richie’s commitment to the cause is more than just ceremonial. “What I love to do is take kids that don’t think so and make them believers in themselves,” he said. “We have to give back—it’s just as simple as that.”
Royal laughs and real impact? That’s what friends are for.
