Legendary horror filmmaker Wes Craven has died at the age of 76.

He directed such beloved films as the original "Nightmare on Elm Street" as well as the "Scream" franchise and lost his battle with brain cancer earlier this week.

Craven is survived by his wife Iya Labunka, who is a film producer and former vice president at Sony Films.

He continued working until the very end of his life, helping to develop an MTV series based on his "Scream" franchise.

In addition to his work in thrillers he also helped guide Meryl Streep to an Oscar nod in the 1999 drama "Music of the Heart."
