David Bowie is among the artists who will write songs for the Sponge Bob Squarepants musical, which is set to premiere in Chicago in June, ahead of its 2016-2017 debut on Broadway.

According to a presser, the musical follows the titular character "who lives in a pineapple under the sea" — and his pals Patrick, Squidward, Sandy Cheeks and Mr. Krabs on a new, exciting journey.

Producers describe the show as "a celebration of unbridled hope, unexpected heroes and pure theatrical invention."

It's the first musical for the Sponge Bob franchise, which previously spawned two movies - this year's The Sponge Bob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, and 2004's The Sponge Bob Squarepants Movie.
