The Department of Meteorology reported that the deep depression is currently centred approximately 300 km northeast of Kankasanthurai, near latitude 12.3°N and longitude 80.6°E.
The department expects this system to move further away from the island, heading north, and weaken.
Due to this, today (01), the Northern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces, as well as the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, may experience several periods of rain.
The department also mentioned that rain or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva Province and the Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 2:00 PM.
Furthermore, the department reported that the warning issued to refrain from fishing and naval activities** in the sea areas around the island **was lifted.
Rain or thundershowers may occur at times in the sea areas extending from Kalutara to Pottuvil, via Galle and Matara, while rain may occur at a few places in the sea areas from Trincomalee to Mannar, via Kankasanthurai.
The department's statement noted that the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee, via Kankasanthurai, and from Galle to Pottuvil, via Hambantota, may be moderately rough at time, while the remaining sea areas around the island may be slightly rough.
