Kahathuduwa Police reported the arrest of a 40-year-old doctor in connection with the alleged attempt to sexually assault a 26-year-old woman inside the Wehterah District Hospital in Kahathuduwa.
The individual arrested is a doctor attached to the Outpatient Department (OPD).
Police stated the complainant had sought treatment for an illness at the Wehterah District Hospital in Kahathuduwa on the 12th of this month. Following the advice of a doctor that day, she submitted a urine sample for testing and returned to the hospital for further treatment on the 19th.
Police investigations revealed a female doctor was available to provide treatment in the OPD at that time, and arrangements were made for her to examine the reports and provide treatment. However, the suspect doctor, who had given previous instructions, reportedly set aside other patients, took the complainant's medical reports, and examined them.
The complaint alleges the suspect then stated he needed to examine the woman, took her into a room where no female officer was present, conducted an examination, and harassed her.
Police stated medical forms were issued to the complainant, and an investigation involving both parties was conducted yesterday (24). The suspect doctor was subsequently arrested and is scheduled to be produced before the Kesbewa Magistrate's Court, according to Kahathuduwa Police.
