The saga that is the repatriation of two elephants gifted from Thailand to Sri Lanka had its latest development yesterday (19).

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Suchart Chomklin, had an audience with Sri Lankan Ambassador in Thailand, E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe.

Taking to Facebook, the Thai Deputy PM noted that they discussed cooperation guidelines on the two Thai Elephants.

The duo under discussion are Thai Raja of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth relic in Kandy and Kandula at the Kelaniya temple.

Chomklin said that the Thai side is very hopeful of bringing the two elephants home, so that they can rest and live peacefully in their native place at the end of their lives.

The Thai Deputy PM added in his post that he expressed his intention to visit the President of Sri Lanka in Colombo in the near future to discuss the relevant repatriation procedure.

The latest development comes amid confirmation by the Foreign Ministry that a Thai delegation is set to visit the island towards the end of this month to discuss the repatriation of the two tuskers.

Our attempts to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the matter proved futile.
