Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya announced today (31) that he will bring the security requests made by Opposition Parliament members to the attention of the President and the Minister of Public Security.

He made this statement during a meeting held today in Parliament with Opposition Parliament members, chaired by the Speaker.

A special discussion regarding the security of Opposition Parliament members was held today in Parliament, chaired by Speaker Dr.Jagath Wickramaratne and attended by IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and a group of party leaders and MPs representing the Opposition participated. They requested the Speaker to arrange for the provision of security for all Opposition MPs.

The Speaker mentioned that he already notified the IGP to take the necessary steps regarding all requests for security made by MPs. He further pointed out that while the government made a policy decision regarding the security of Parliament members, he had acted beyond that to address the relevant requests, and security arrangements have already been made for some MPs.

The Speaker also informed the IGP to take the necessary steps concerning the requests made by the Opposition MPs today.

Commenting on the matter, the IGP stated that he would take action to inform the Honourable President and the Minister of Public Security about this request.

The Opposition MPs who participated in the meeting pointed out that all Opposition MPs should first be provided with security to carry out their political activities in a safe environment without hindrance, and that further steps should be taken afterward based on a threat assessment report.

Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Chaminda Kularatne, Sergeant-at-Arms of Parliament Kushan Jayaratne, and a group of officers representing the Sri Lanka Police also attended the special discussion.
