China has accused the United States of "severely violating" the terms of a recently brokered trade truce, warning that it will take firm measures to protect its national interests.

In a statement released Monday, China’s Ministry of Commerce said Washington had “seriously undermined” the agreement reached during trade talks in Geneva last month, where both sides agreed to significantly reduce tariffs on each other’s goods.

“The United States has acted in bad faith and breached both the spirit and letter of the Geneva agreement,” a ministry spokesperson said. “These actions have also gravely violated the consensus reached during the January phone call between President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump.”

The remarks came in response to President Trump’s own comments last Friday, when he accused China of having “totally violated its agreement with us,” without specifying which terms had been breached. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer later clarified that China had failed to dismantle non-tariff barriers as promised under the deal.

Under the terms of the truce negotiated in May, the U.S. agreed to lower tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, while China reduced its tariffs on American goods from 125% to 10%.

However, tensions have escalated in recent days following a series of U.S. actions that Beijing says violate the accord. These include restrictions on sales of advanced computer chip design software to Chinese firms, warnings issued to U.S. companies against using semiconductors from Chinese tech giant Huawei, and the cancellation of student visas for Chinese nationals pursuing science and technology degrees in the United States.
