Paul McCartney has been named the U.K.'s most successful albums act of all time.

The former Beatle was awarded the Official Chart Record Breaker Award, which is presented to artists achieving the greatest sales feats, by the Official Charts Company.

McCartney has scored 22 number one albums over the course of his career while selling over 700 million albums worldwide.

"It is a huge honor for the Official Charts to pay tribute to Paul McCartney's incredible achievements with this special award," chief executive of the Official Charts Company, Martin Talbot, added.

"Over more than 50 years, Paul has been a fixture on the British and world music scene - so to recognize his contribution as part of the UK Albums Chart's 60th birthday feels absolutely appropriate."
