Tom Petty was honored at the recent Songwriters Hall of Fame Ceremony held at the Marriott Marquee Ballroom in New York on June 9.

Other artists shown recognition throughout the night included Elvis Costello, Chic's Nile Rodgers, Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Chip Taylor and more.

"I've won lots of awards, but this one I've wanted for a long time," Rodgers said.

"I'd asked everybody I know: 'How many hit records do you have to write to get one of these?' So finally, after all these years, I can be in that heralded, wonderful club.

This is the one that means everything to me."

The annual Songwriters Hall of Fame event is in its 47th year and is attended primarily by songwriters, artists, publishers, label execs and other music-industry insiders
