As the Rolling Stones made their return to Mexico, enigmatic frontman Mick Jagger couldn't pass up the chance to poke fun at actor Sean Penn's now infamous interview with Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman while the convicted drug lord was a fugitive from justice.

"Sean Penn came to interview me at the hotel, but I escaped," he told a crowd of about 60,000 fans who packed a sports stadium in the capital.

Speaking in a heavily accented but charming Spanish, Jagger said the Stones were "having a great time in Mexico" and expressed fondness for the city's iconic Zocalo, or main square, for "lucha libre" wrestling and for the ancient pyramid ruins of Teotihuacan outside the capital.

"It has been 10 years since we last came to Mexico," Jagger said. "It's cool to be back."
