The hospital where Paul McCartney was born is set to be razed to make way for a value supermarket.

The former site of Walton Hospital, where former the Beatles star was born 73 years ago has laid empty since 2010 but is now set to become a branch of Aldi.

Work will commence in January, and will also see nearly 200 new homes built on the site off Rice Lane in Walton.

The development will include 195 properties with a mixture of houses, flats and bungalows. As part of the plan, 64 houses and apartments will be designated for affordable rent and 37 houses for shared ownership by housing association Riverside.

"We are committed to building stable homes for those at the sharp end of the housing crisis so are delighted to announce that we will start work on site in November," Riverside's project manager Conor McGuigan said.

"This development is possible thanks to the Homes and Communities Agency, which is providing funding through its Affordable Homes Programme."
