Beach Attire

When it comes to beach attire, you want to look for items that will offer you comfort and convenience.

There are cover-ups that are very light and loose-fitting that can be worn on top of a bathing suit which can help reduce exposure to the sun as well as provide modesty when you need it.

Sundresses are fantastic since they are easy to wear and can make you look dressed up in minutes.

Some styles are more casual while others can look deceptively elegant, such as the maxi sundress.

Shorts and t-shirts or tank tops are another common staple at the beach.

Lightweight shorts tend to be more ideal than jean shorts since they can be harder to put on if your legs are wet from being in the water. Denim also takes longer to dry.

Water Bottle

Carrying your own water bottle is a good idea for several reasons. First, it's important to stay hydrated when you are out in the sun.

Second, it's better for the environment to drink from reusable bottles instead of disposable ones and third, it's easier on your wallet.

Convenience items such as drinks and snacks tend to be pricey in beach and resort areas.

Water bottles have become quite fancy over the years.

There are standard models but there are also some that have built-in filters, allowing you to refill with water from a tap.

Newer models will allow you to infuse your water with the fresh, all-natural flavor of fruit.

Shade

If you are going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time, it's probably a good idea to plan for some shade.

Not only does overexposure to sunlight put you at risk for certain medical conditions, it can also drain you of your energy.

A wide-brimmed sun hat can protect your scalp, face and eyes as well as keeping you cool.

They come in a variety of fabrics but the straw ones are durable, lightweight, easy to clean and attractive.

Sunglasses are a chic way to keep the sun out of your eyes and you can easily show off your personality since they come in a wide range of styles.

Inexpensive shades in vintage 80s styles are making a comeback whereas the more priceyRay Ban Wayfarers have never gone out of style.

Umbrellas are another popular mainstay at beaches.

Relaxing under the protection of an umbrella can keep you from getting sunburned but it can also help keep wind and blowing sand from ruining your day.

Of course, it also provides you with a little extra privacy in a crowded place.

Beach Towels

It's amazing how many times I've seen someone (myself included) arrive at the beach with everything but a nice beach towel.

No one wants to get stuck sitting directly on the sand all day but, unfortunately, it happens.

The great thing about beach towels is that they come in a variety of sizes and textures.

If you plan to sunbathe or stretch out to read, make sure your towel is long enough to accommodate.

In order to keep your towel from looking too dirty, avoid buying light colored fabrics.

You can also choose from a number of cute designs (I personally love my Hello Kitty beach towel).

When you're done for the day, remember to brush off any debris before folding it up.

Skin Protection

Our body's largest organ is our skin which means that we should go to great lengths to protect it.

While cover-ups, sun hats and umbrellas are effective, we can take additional steps to keep our skin happy and healthy.

Sunscreen should be applied often and liberally which means that purchasing a larger quantity is ideal.

If you will be enjoying the beach with children, look for products specifically designed for little ones.

If you will be in an area where there will be mosquitoes, flies or other bugs, consider picking up some insect repellent.

You can choose from the more traditional spray, a non-toxic, deet-free insect repellent bracelet, or an ultrasonic pest repeller which can protect you from mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches and even rats.

Beach and Cooler Bags

A beach bag is a necessity since you will need something to carry your towel, sunglasses, books, sunscreen and other accessories.

Lightweight straw totes will give you the space that you need in a bag that's easy to clean.

You may also opt for an insulated cooler bag since they are typically water resistant and can be used for keeping snacks and drinks cool in the sun.

Food can easily spoil if it gets too hot and putting water bottles in a regular bag with books invites the risk of them getting wet and damaged.

An easy compromise is mesh bag with an insulted bottom.

You really do get the best of both worlds.

The top part is made of mesh which allows you to store all of your non-food items (with the added benefit of them being surrounded by a breathable fabric) while the bottom is a cooler capable of holding treats for your day
