Patterns (and lots of them)

If you’ve been afraid to decorate with patterns in the past, this is the year to get over it! Patterns add life, excitement and fun, and this year more than ever it’s important to mix them and match them. Play with different sizes and scales and don’t worry too much about following the rules.

Warm Metallics

Move over chrome, this year it’s gold’s turn to shine. Warm metallics have been creeping into homes for the past few years and this year the trend is continuing. Variations of gold including rose and brass colors will be everywhere from furniture, to kitchen and bath fixtures, to hardware. And don’t worry about making everything match – mix warm metallics with your existing finishes and you’ll be right on trend.

Deep Hues and Vibrant Colors

Deep jewel tones (peacock blue, emerald green and purple for example) will be seen all over interiors this year. When mixed with the year’s warm metallic’s it will be like living in a luxurious jewel box.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is back! Granted, using it in small doses has been popular for the last few years, but in 2015 it will be much bolder. Large-scale patterns are becoming increasingly popular, and finding new places to put it (ceilings anyone?) is high on the list of wallpaper trends.

Merging Indoors and Out

It’s always been important to add natural elements indoors, but this year the line between indoors and out will be softened even more. Stone and brick facades will be popular (think stone-clad fireplace walls and exposed brick walls) as will raw wood architectural elements (such as exposed beams). Also, don’t be afraid to use furniture meant for the outdoors inside (like teak tables and loungers). Just be careful not to overdo it.

Ethnic Prints

Ethnic prints and the modern global look aren’t going anywhere this year. Adding a little exotic flair gives a room a cultural, lived in look so if you see a fun Ikat pattern or you want to invest in a Turkish rug go for it!

Mixing Finishes

We all know that the days of matching furniture and fabrics is over, but this year it’s being taken a step further. One of the top decorating trends for 2015 is to mix finishes – mix hardware, mix woods, mix textures – mix everything!

Pale Colors

For those people who aren’t into deep colors and jewel tones, there’s good news. It’s equally trendy to veer off into pale colors (particularly in rooms with lots of natural light). Pale colors have a calming effect so if that’s what you’re looking for consider pale pink, pale mauve, or even pale neutrals like grey or taupe. Mint green is also still hot.

Decorating Hacks

Decorating hacks will be huge in 2015. This means finding clever solutions to your decorating problems. It could mean using an item for something other than its intended purpose, or an unexpected DIY solution to make something bigger and better.
