Madonna had to resolve her custody dispute with son Rocco in order to get her adoption plans greenlit, according to reports.
TMZ reports that the battle was a cause of major concern for the Malawian judge overseeing the singer's request to adopt twins Stella and Esther.

A court insider told the publication the judge was worried about allowing the girls to enter a 'toxic' environment and was only appeased once the dispute was resolved.

MailOnline has contacted representatives for Madonna and is awaiting comment.

Madonna, 58, also convinced the Malawian authorities to allow her to adopt the girls by suggesting her step sister would raise them in the event of her untimely death.

The Material Girl hitmaker was granted permission by the country's high court to bring the girls to New York.

She chartered a private jet to bring Stella and Esther to her home in the city, which was described by the judge as 'a luxurious, spacious and comfortable abode in an affluent neighbourhood'.

In an Instagram post, Madonna claimed: 'I am deeply grateful to all those in Malawi who helped make this possible, and I ask the media please to respect our privacy during this transitional time.'

Madonna adopted Malawian children David Banda and Mercy James in 2006 and 2009. She has two other children, Lourdes and Rocco, from previous relationships.

The singer previously denied reports that she wanted to adopt again after she visited Malawi last month, at the time saying her trip was for her charity work.

She established the non-profit Raising Malawi in 2006 to provide health and education programmes, particularly for girls.
